Family Therapy
As a therapist, I believe that families are complex systems that function uniquely and dynamically. I take a strengths-based and collaborative approach to family therapy, which involves working with the family to identify their strengths and resources and build on them to promote positive change.
When working with African American families, I also consider the unique challenges and strengths of the black family system. The black family system has a rich history and cultural context, and it has been shaped by systemic oppression, racism, and discrimination. Despite these challenges, the black family system
is resilient and has strengths that can be leveraged in therapy.
In family therapy, I work to create a safe and supportive environment that promotes open communication and understanding between family members. I use a range of evidence-based interventions, such as structural family therapy, narrative therapy, and emotion-focused therapy, to help families improve communication, resolve conflicts, and strengthen their relationships. I also incorporate a cultural and systemic perspective into my approach, exploring how the family's experiences of racism, discrimination, and oppression may impact their relationships and overall well-being. By understanding African American families' unique experiences and challenges, I can provide more effective and culturally responsive care.
As a therapist, I also believe in the importance of using the therapeutic use of self in family therapy. This involves being present, empathetic, and attuned to each family member's needs and experiences. I create a safe space where family members can express themselves openly and honestly while respecting and supporting each other.
Overall, my approach to family therapy is rooted in collaboration, cultural humility, and the therapeutic use of self. I work with families to build on their strengths and resources while exploring the impact of systemic oppression and racism on their relationships and overall well-being. Families can improve communication, resolve conflicts, and strengthen their relationships through this collaborative process.
Family therapy is a type of therapy that involves working with families and couples to address issues that affect the entire family system. As a therapist, I recognize that each family is unique and may require a different approach to address their needs and concerns. I aim to create a safe and supportive environment that allows all family members to express their feelings and perspectives and work towards a shared understanding and solutions.
